Novel Race: Anyone fancy taking over...

Word count: 24,609
A few of you have been in touch following the messages around the blogs of people we haven't seen for a wee while...While most racers seem glad of the nudge, I know that some people weren't too happy to be contacted in that way but it was something we all discussed online over the last few weeks and as I don't have email addresses for everyone in the Race, it did seem the right thing to do and I'm grateful to Zinnia for taking it on.
I know that a blog comment can sometimes seem a bit brusque and I am sorry if anyone's been upset by it but I do want everyone to know that this has been such a cool group of people and our intentions were absolutely to remind people of the Race's existence, and to encourage them to think about coming back on board if time allows. The benefit of this group has been its fantastic flexibility.
It's coming up to summer, and to the six month 'anniversary' of Lucy/Sue and I setting up the Race - Liz was our first winner, if you recall, and she got her rather covetable prize this week. With this in mind, and after being on the receiving end of a few unhappy emails, I am thinking now might be the right time to hand on the baton to someone else. I think the best way to approach this would be for anyone who might like to do this to email me (if you don't have my address, you can contact me via my website) . Another option might be to set up a blog where all novel racers are 'owners' and can post their progress and favourite links- could be a really lively site, I think. But it would involve some admin I don't really have the time to undertake.
I'll host coffee breaks until the end of June and then let you know what's happening. I hope you'll understand that at present the commitment's a little more than I really feel able to give. I will probably still be blogging and surfing the other racers' blogs but less regularly. I really hope the race continues in some form, especially for our newer recruits..

Oh..and I've only just joined! I do totally understand how you feel though, Kate. Looking over the site and comments, you and your team have done a fantastic job and I am already making use of some of the resources you mentioned.
I wrote about The Self Preservation Society on my new little blog because it was so great.
Good luck with your next novel - you're very inspiring.

PS lost my glasses so can barely see the pc let alone any typos so forgive any please.

Hi Kate,

Can totally understand the time/commitment thing, which is why I'm not going to take the baton on (sorry)...

I didn't take exception to anything .I know I am useless at putting stuff in sidebars etc.And thanks to Zinnia and BE Sanderson (thanks BE for email, sorry keep meaning to email you!) I now know.

Am also useless at going round eveyrone's blogs, because I simplydon't have time.I've really enjoyed the coffee breaks though.

Hurrah for Kate and Lucy for thinkign it up.

Thank you so much for the novel race! It's been such a great help and I know it will continue to be at its new home, wherever that is. I've pulled out of the race for now, although not for good, more like Paula Radcliffe going for that piddle! I look forward to joining in the next heat.

I understand completely, Kate. Well, except for the people who got snerty about being gently nudged to participate. Why would you join in this race if you didn't want to participate? Feh.

I hope someone takes over. I wish I could but this is the worst possible time for me. What with moving and all. If no one has the time, I'll understand that, too.

You're very welcome, Jane. And thanks to Zinnia for stopping by my blog, and everyone else's. =o)

Ack! I forgot to thank Kate!

Thank you for doing this, Kate. I've met some really wonderful people through the race, and although I don't get around to everyone's blogs as often as I'd like, I do enjoy reading them and seeing what writers across the big pond have to say. =oD

I really hope the race continues at another site, though I completely understand that it must be a lot of work for you! I guess if there was a separate blog that we all contributed to (maybe taking turns to post the Coffee Break?) it would be more collaborative and less the responsibility of one (already overworked) person. Let me know if I can do anything to help...

Hi Kate,

I thought the “nudge” was a great idea ~ especially as it coincided with my return to the real world, post-wedding, and my mid-year resolution to get the writing back on track & focus a bit more.

On that note, and on the crest of the current wave of writing enthusiasm that I am surfing, I’ll put myself forward to host the novel race / coffee breaks . I’ll email you tonight to put my formal “bid” in,

Best wishes
Kate K

The race has been brilliant and so wonderful to have created a community that is all supporting. Kate's comparision a while ago to weight watchers was pretty correct. The weekly coffees give us the opportunity to fess up about the good, the bad, and the down right ugly with people who understand. So let's not throw the towel in......help is at hand for the technically challenged. Lets find a new host, but I have to say no one will be able to live up to you Kate :-)

A HUGE thanks to Kate and Lucy/Sue and then to Zinnia for being willing to visit all the blogs. Now let's find a volonteer

Thank you so much Kate and Lucy for setting this up and to Zinnia for chasing. I haven't made a particularly good contribution to the racers having stalled whilst waiting to hear about novel 1 but I am very keen to continue. My heart sank a bit when it looked as if no-one wanted to pick up the baton as I was very reluctant to do so myself.. then I saw the comment from Kate Kingsley. Kate k, if you do continue the coffee break I for one would be very grateful.

Thanks ChrisH, I'm happy to pick up the baton if I haven't been beaten to it ~ although Kate is going to be a very hard act to follow! Thanks for all the hosting so far Kate, you've been a star,

Kate K

Thanks Kate, for everything you've done. This has been a great space to discuss the work-in-progress, to cheer on fellow racers and to get advice, support and encouragement when necessary.

I can't take over at the moment due to house move and everything else taking over my life but will definitely come to yours, Kate K, if you become the new hostess with the mostest.

It's been a pleasure - really good fun and I feel lucky to have been in such great writing company this year.
Cheers to the racers!

This is the idea I like best. On the other hand, I have no idea how it is done. (I can, however, change the ribbon on a manual typewriter.) Even though I'm a sometimey poster, I enjoy coming by and reading what others write. And I appreciate the folks who have dropped by my Live Journal to say hi. I plan on sticking around no matter what form the Novel Racers takes in the next phase.

Thanks for all you've done.

Hi Kate.

This community is fantastic, and I'm glad that it's going to continue. I feel a kinship with my fellow writers here.

I too love the idea of a community blog.

Thanks for all the lovely comments, I am really touched and also so thrilled that there's a good chance now of the Novel Race continuing with its own blog, perhaps.

I promise to email people and comment in more detail once I get chance but tomorrow I have a couple of quite big meetings and won't be around so it won't be till Friday at the earliest.

Thanks again. What a top bunch!

I can't bear the idea that it might stop because I've been loving being part of this. I'm definitely interested whatever shape the Novel Racers takes from here.

Hello, is it safe to come out? Poor Kate, I'm sorry you got so much flak as a result of my 'help' and that this has been the catalyst for your decision to stand down. I didn't really want to switch on my computer this morning, but it's been reassuring to discover that I haven't upset everyone on the Internet. I'm glad Kate K has offered to host the race, as I think it's a delightful supportive group, and I'd like to stay if you'll have me... won't be volunteering for anything for a while though!

Sorry you got some iffy comments about your nudge. I don't see any problem with it myself, though of course I would say that as I didn't need one! :D

If someone doesn't want to support other novel racers but is happy to be on the blogroll, should they really be there?

But my favourite idea is the multi-owner blog. Then we only have one place to look to find out how the others are all doing.

It should be fairly easy to set up a blog; I'd be happy to do it on Blogger as I'm familiar with it.

I had a quick look at the blogger help section, and the multi-user blog looks fairly straightforward to set up (and thats coming from someone who is NOT a pc whizz!), so if people fancy that option it shouldn't be too much of an ordeal to get it going. "Thank you" to Nichola for volunteering for that role :-)

So sorry to hear you're stepping down Kate but I can imagine how much time the admin must take and with more and more racers joining I can totally understand how it would begin to eat up your time. Thanks for doing a fantastic job. I'd be quite lost without the novel racers and would hate for it to tail off or stop.

Big thanks to Kate K and Nichola for stepping up to help organise Novel Racers v.2. I'll do whatever I can to support you.

Well that was easy! I've started a novel racers blog and left the page blank - not to jump the gun but I wanted to make sure we had the URL before someone else nicked it!

It seems there's an option of other people being admin (has the power to edit all posts) or an author (can only edit their own).

So I guess it's down to people letting me know if they want to sign up and which role they want.

I'm thinking out of a possible thirty, 5 or 6 admin should be enough; what do others think?

The blog's a blank page at the moment but I'll set up an email link on my blogger profile so people can get in touch with me regarding suggestions.

When I get back home later on this evening I'll see if anyone's interested.

(I need someone to keep my addiction to changing blogger templates in check)!

Hey Kate!

I completely understand about the time/commitment thing. It's something that I'm juggling with right now!

When I first read this post I'll admit, alarm bells did ring! I may be on a wee break from blogging at the moment but I'd be completely lost without the Novel Racers! Being part of this community has helped me so much! I thank you and Lucy/Sue for starting this and I hope it continues in some format!

I'll be willing to do anything I can to help the Novel Racers to continue!

By the way, I think it was nice of Zinnia to visit everyones blogs! I can't believe you got some bad comments/mail from some of the members. If they're like that should they really be part of this?

As I said before, I'm on a bit of a break but I'll be back! I don't want to leave the Race. It's the last thing I want.

I should probably post the URL shouldn't I?!

I've fixed it so only blog authors can leave comments, but everyone with internet access can view the blog.

It's at:

http://novelracers.blogspot.com/

As I said to CTaylor earlier hark at me on a power trip! :D

I don't have everyone's email address but I can be contacted through the email link in my profile. I really hope the novel race carries on as we have a great feeling of community and mutual support.

And I promise not to play around with the blog template too much!

as a response to BE Sanderson about snerty people. FEH?..
some of the novel racers have boring old book contracts with deadlines to meet... some of the novel racers also have commitments on fridays and some of the novel racers may have thought that it wasn't so much 'a gentle nudge' as a ticking off.
The Novel Race is a brilliant idea and I've told Kate that but BE, just walk a mile in my shoes and then come back and call me snerty.
